Perhaps one of the ugliest insects is the Arachnocampa Luminosa, which in the larvae stage resembles a long maggot like creature. Their one redeeming quality is they produce light to attract smaller insects and also as a way to rid their systems of waste. When collected inside the dark caves, millions of these glowworms give off an intimate and fascinating blue and green light. Thousands of these critters amalgamate to create an experience heralded as one of the most enriching opportunities for both tourists and locals to marvel at the natural beauty New Zealand has to offer. Visitors can view the phenomenon first hand through a guided tour, though it must be noted pictures are not allowed in many sections of the caves, as camera flashes and such can damage the health and light of the glowworms. Ready to visit a cotton castle? No one will want to miss it!
